The landlocked Central European country Hungary is a popular destination among city trippers as well as nature lovers. Capital Budapest is one of the most visited cities in Europe and it has been named the most beautiful city in the world. Hungary holds a few European records too. It is home to the largest natural grassland in Europe, the largest thermal lake in Europe and the second largest thermal lake in the world.
Other travelers favorite cities are Pecs and Eger, which both have a historic city center. But aside from the larger towns, Hungary also offers a multitude of small countryside villages where nature is still winning. In Eastern Hungary, the grasslands rule the scenery and they’re just briefly interrupted by the beautiful Bükk mountains where life has been good since Neanderthal times. In the Bükk region, you can find cycling routes, hiking trails, wineries, and caves! Suba Lyuk is just one of these caves, but it’s a historically important site where remains of Neanderthal have been found.
Hungary can be traveled by train and train travel is very cheap. Especially when visiting the major cities, train travel is the way to go and Hungary is an awesome place to include in a European train trip. If you plan on visiting the countryside, a car is recommended.
Hungary is not an LGBT mecca, but it still is a safe country to visit for LGBTQ travelers. Each year, LGBT can attend the Pride in Budapest, but there aren’t many other options aside from the Pride Parade.
