Mexico

Mexico - Central America - Only Once Today

The United Mexican States is technically a part of North America. When traveling there it feels more like Central America. Mexico City is the capital and the most touristic areas are the Yucatan and Quintana Roo in the Caribbean, with tropical islands like Cozumel or Isla Mujeres. The Pacific side is also well visited and has a lot of great surfing spots. Most Mexicans are Catholic and speak Spanish, but you won’t have to search long for English speaking Mexicans. When traveling from Europe, Cancun is probably the cheapest airport to fly into Mexico. A lot of travelers fly into Mexico City as well. As for public transportation, Mexico has the best bus services in Central America. ADO buses are luxurious and just great to use and we devoted an article on public transportation in Mexico. We’ve lived in Playa Del Carmen for a while, but visited a lot of places in Mexico. We even plan on going back there a few more times! Mexico has a lot of natural beauty and highlights to discover. Mexico is a perfect destination to practice your bargaining skills!

In Mexico, chances are good you’ll be a target for common travel scams and we encountered an unexpected road bock on our trip from Palenque to San Cristobal Las Casas.

Mexico is quite LGBT tolerant and in many cities, you’ll see same-sex couples holding hands. Check our guide to LGBT travel in Mexico here.
