Choosing the best hostel in Antigua Guatemala
Antigua is one of these places where you have a wide selection of hostels to choose from. It’s actually a destination where we did some hostel shopping while exploring the city. It’s quite easy to do, especially if you’re staying for a while. We payed for our first hostel for 1 night and spent an afternoon shopping hostels. It was actually quite fun to walk into all the different hostels, check out the rooms, ask for prices, and then check out the next one.
But, how do you select the right one before getting there?
Types of accommodation in Antigua
In Antigua, you can find a few different types of accommodation. If you want to stay at a hotel, we recommend these beautifully designed boutique hotels in Antigua.
In the hostel range, you get something else. Most hostels offer shared rooms, where you book a bunk bed in a room with multiple beds. You share your room with other travellers.
Rooms can have different amounts of beds, like 4, 6, or 8. In some cases, there are even more than 8 bunk beds in one dorm room.

Consider the room types
While some hostels only offer dorms, some other hostels also have private rooms at a budget-friendly price.
Depending on your travel style or specific needs for your stay in Antigua, you can choose which room type suits you best.
Pods or bunk beds?
If you’re getting a dorm bed, you’ll see that there’s a big difference in the options as well. The biggest difference is the type of bunk beds.
Some hostels still have the old-school bunk beds, which are fine, but not very private. And they tend to move when your bunk partner moves.
Other hostels boast the more interesting pod style beds, which offer a lot more privacy. In these pods, you have like a small rooms for you own, complete with light, usb port, and a curtain for privacy.
Check the amenities
Hostels usually offer a few amenities for backpackers, like an equipped kitchen where you can cook your own meal and a few common areas where you can meet other travellers.
If you need the use of a kitchen to keep your expenses low, then make sure that there’s one available.
We found out the hard way a few times, finding out that there was no kitchen, as we didn’t check on that. So, we were forced to eat out every day, pushing up the cost of our trip.
Pick a good location
The importance of the location is particularly important if you’re a first time visitor or if you don’t fancy walking a lot.
In that case, we recommend getting a hostel in the historic city centre, where you’re within walking distance from all the main sights and activities.
In any case, Antigua is not that large, so it’s usually possible to walk, even if you’re in one of the hostels that’s a little further away. We noticed that when staying in a different area, like on the other side of town, that’s the perfect way to find other gems you had not considered visiting when you were in a different hostel.
So, each location has advantages!

Antigua is a nice place to practice your bargaining skills. Since there are so many hostels to choose from, you can easily give it a try.
